Deciding on a school for your children is a very complex decision. Our goal is to have you recopgnize the value of having your child attend the American School of Tangier. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions:
Who attends the American School of Tangier? AST hosts students from many different countries annually that include the United States, France, The Netherlands, Germany, and others. Moroccan nationals comprise the great majority of our entire student population. Families attend AST because (among other things) they value a safe, ambitious learning environment that is international in nature. Most understand that AST is a conduit to the best universities globally, and although many parents do not speak English, they value English instruction for their children.
Will an American style education meet the needs of my child?
The American style of education is a holistic approach that focuses on inclusion, inquiry, and is a systematic approach where students learn from both teachers and their peers. The AST education includes long-range foci on the following: developing informed citizens, building a solid base of knowledge, and enhancing individual empowerment.
What if we only plan on enrolling for a few years?
The American School of Tangier has students enrolling as well as moving on throughout the school year – this is typical of any international school. When families decide to leave, AST prepares documentation to help families make their transitions.
What other programs are offered beyond the typical school day? AST offerrs a range of activities for our students and parents. On campus, expect to see interscholastic sports for both boys and girls, swim and SCUBA classes in our outdoor pool, sports leagues, and evening programs for the community at large. AST continues to host Arabic programs for US college students throughout the summer and fall.
What about financial aid and scholarships? AST offers select scholarships to high-achieving national and overseas students. Please refer to the Scholarship section of this website for more details.
What is your academic calendar? The school day begins at 815AM and continues with core instruction until 330PM daily. After that, students may participate in clubs, sports, tutoring, and other enrichment activities. The school operates on a 180-day instructional calendar that begins around 1 September and concludes mid-June. Graduation commencement is usually set for the last day of school. Students have holidays that reflect both the American and the Moroccan cultures including Winter and Spring Breaks, and an adapted schedule during Ramadan.
