Overview

From its founding in 1950 by Omar Pound, the American School of Tangier has stood for cultural diversity, open-mindedness, and harmony between nationalities and backgrounds. Our history is truly original and has been shared with some of the biggest names in the history of American arts. Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, William Borroughs, Bruce Webber, Yves Saint-Laurent, and others have all worked with our students on campus.  The Board of Trustees includes professionals from all walks of life who take an active interest in the fortunes  of the school.   AST is a founding member of the Mediterranean Association of International Schools.

Students and Faculty

At present, there are 321 students enrolled school-wide, with 87 students in grades 9 through 12. Approximately 90% have Moroccan family heritage, though there are students enrolled from numerous European countries. All graduates usually attend post-secondary institutions upon graduation and AST boasts college acceptances from many of the best schools in the world. Most of our students speak at least three languages, inculding English, Arabic, French, Dutch, and Spanish.  AST employs 40 international and Moroccan teachers; average class size is 20.

Academic Requirements for Graduation

In order to graduate from AST a student must pass each of the following minimum requirements in addition to spending at least 2 years as a high school student.  On rare occasions, a student may be admitted for his/her senior year.

French                             2 years (4 if Moroccan)
Arabic                              2 years (4 if Moroccan)
History                             3 years
Mathematics                     3 years
Science                            3 years
Physical Education            4 years

7th through 11th Students must be enrolled in 6 standard courses, plus Physical Education each term. 
Our Pre-K through 6th grades follow a US-style curriculum taught in English.  AP sections are offered in some subject areas.

Grade Point Average
Students’ GPAs will be calculated at the end of the year from the final grade in each course, including PE, Senior Service Learning, and Senior Optional Drama Project.  Some courses will be weighted more highly than others in this computation. Class rank will not be calculated except for the determination of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the senior class.


Extra-curricular Activities

AST offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, including drama, service learning, art, music, sports, computer club, film club, and other activities that vary from year to year.  Drama has traditionally been the centerpiece of AST activities, with productions staged all around the city of Tangier.
