Overview

From its founding in 1950 by Omar Pound, the American School of Tangier has stood for cultural diversity, open-mindedness, and harmony between nationalities and backgrounds. Our history is truly original and has been shared with some of the great names in modern culture. Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, William Burroughs, Bruce Webber, Yves Saint-Laurent, and others have all worked with our students on campus.  The Board of Trustees includes professionals from all walks of life who take an active interest in the fortunes of the school.   AST is a founding member of the Mediterranean Association of International Schools.

 

Calendar

AST is on a trimester schedule, September-June.

 

Students and Faculty

Size:  333, PreK-12.  There are 86 students in grades 9-12. Average class size:  22, with maximum of 25.

Senior class size:  19; gender: 8 (F)/11 (M); nationality: 17 (Moroccan), 2 (European) Faculty: 39 mixed international and local.

 

Academic Program

In order to graduate from AST a student must pass each of the following minimum requirements in addition to spending at least 2 years at the school as a high school student.  On rare occasions, a student may be admitted

for his/her senior year.

English                    4 years                                

History                   3 years

French                     2 years (4 if Moroccan)     

Math                        3 years

Arabic                      2 years (4 if Moroccan)     

Science                     3 years

Physical Education   3 years

 

7th   through  11th   grade  students  must  be  enrolled  in  6  standard  courses,  plus  Physical  Education  each term.  Seniors must take at least 6 courses.  Our Pre-K through 6th grades follow a US-style curriculum taught in English.  PE is optional in the 12th grade.

 

 

AP Program

AP courses have expanded from one in 2011-12 (French) to the following offerings:

In 2012-13 AST will offer AP courses in Calculus AB, Biology, French, Computer Science, and European History.  In 2013-14 AST will add Physics, Chemistry, and English.

AP participation:  Five AP courses are offered with a total enrollment of 56 students.

Grade  Point  Average

Students’ GPAs will be calculated at the end of the year from the final grade in each course, including PE and Service Learning. Class rank will not be calculated except for the determination of the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the senior class.  AP courses are weighted; A =5, B=4, C=3, D=1, F=0.

 

Extra-curricular Activities

AST offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, including drama, service learning, art, music, sports, computer club, film club, and other activities that vary from year to year.  Drama has traditionally been the centerpiece of AST activities, with productions staged all around the city of Tangier.

 

Service Learning and Senior Blogs

Service learning is required for 11th and 12th graders and strongly recommended for students in the lower grades. Seniors are required to keep blogs wherein they can comment and reflect on their service learning projects and on their regular course work.  Links to their blogs can be found at www.ast.ma.
